سازمان بین المللی دریانوردی (IMO) چندین کنوانسیون کلیدی دارد که کشتی ها را ملزم به رعایت الزامات ایمنی، بهداشت و محیط زیست می کند. یکی از مهمترین چارچوب ها، کنوانسیون بین المللی ایمنی جان در دریا (SOLAS) به همراه کنوانسیون MARPOL برای پیشگیری از آلودگی است.

• SOLAS (ایمنی جان در دریا)

کنوانسیون ایمنی جان در دریا SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea)  یک معاهده بین‌المللی دریایی است که حداقل استانداردهای ایمنی را برای کشتی‌ها و رویه‌های کشتیرانی تعیین می‌کند. اولین بار در سال 1914 پس از غرق شدن کشتی RMS تایتانیک، SOLAS  متعاقبا چندین بار در طول سال ها به روز شد، با آخرین اصلاحیه SOLAS 1974 که در سال 1980 لازم الاجرا شد. هدف این کنوانسیون تضمین ایمنی جان انسان ها در دریا، ایمنی کشتی ها، و ایمنی اموال در کشتی است.

• MARPOL (آلودگی دریایی)

کنوانسیون بین المللی جلوگیری از آلودگی ناشی از کشتی ­ها (مارپل)

آلودگی آب­ها، از اساسی­ ترین دغدغه ­های جهانی برای حفظ محیط زیست دریا است که می­ تواند موجب آسیب به گیاهان، جانوران و اکو سیستم های دریایی و همچنین اخلال در بهره برداری انسان از دریا و ضرر به صنعت گردشگری و ماهیگیری شود. انواع مختلف آلودگی دریا ناشی از کشتی­ها از جمله تخلیه زباله، نفت و مواد مشتق آن در آب و آلودگی‌های ناشی از دود کشتی‌ها، سبب ایجاد یک معاهده مهم بین­ المللی جهت پیشگیری از آن­ها شد. کنوانسیون بین المللی جلوگیری از آلودگی ناشی از کشتی­ها یا مارپل معاهده­ ای است که طی آن تمامی کشتی‌های تحت پرچم کشورهای امضا کننده ­ی مارپل، صرف نظر از مبدأ و مقصد، موظف و ملزم به انجام مقررات آن می‌باشند و ملل عضو، مسئول تمامی کشتی‌ها و شناورهایی می‌باشند که تحت ملیت مربوطه‌شان به ثبت رسیده‌اند. واژه مارپل مخفف عبارت Marine Pollution  به معنای آلودگی دریاست.

• STCW (استانداردهای آموزش، صدور گواهینامه و نگهبانی برای دریانوردان)

این کنوانسیون الزامات آموزشی و صدور گواهینامه برای دریانوردان را تشریح می‌کند و تضمین می‌کند که خدمه برای رسیدگی به چالش‌های ایمنی و زیست محیطی به اندازه کافی آموزش دیده‌اند. این استانداردها متشکل است از مخفف کلمات لاتین Standards of Training , Certification and Watch keeping  می باشد و به معنای استاندارد های آموزش، گواهینامه، مراقبت ها یا نگهبانی های دریانوردی است.

• کد ISPS (کد امنیتی بین‌المللی کشتی و تأسیسات بندری)

ISPS  مخفف کلمات لاتین (International Ship and port Security) و به معنی امنیت بین المللی کشتی ها و بنادر می باشد. این معیار‌‌ها تحت عنوان کد امنیت بین المللی کشتی و بندر نام گرفت. معیارهای یاد شده فوق در یک جلسه اضطراری بحث و بررسی شد و مقرر گردید که بند جدیدی به کنوانسیون بین المللی  سولاس (SOLAS) مصوبه مورخ 1974 فصل یازدهم قسمت دوم، اضافه شده است.

These standards consist of the abbreviation of the Latin words Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping, and it means the standards of training, certification, cares or watches of maritime, which was approved in 1978 by the conference of the International Maritime Organization in London and in It was implemented in 1984.

4- ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code)
